Audio-Technica — the value-per-dollar champion

Founded in Tokyo in 1962 to make phonograph cartridges, Audio-Technica has grown into a top-tier microphone brand that’s privately held and earning somewhere around $500–$800 million a year. Their reputation is for giving you 90% of a $2,000 mic for $200.

Mics for every budget — and headphones too

Audio-Technica covers the full pyramid. At the bottom is the AT2020 — a $99 large-diaphragm condenser that has launched more home studios than any other mic in history. At the top sit the 50-series studio condensers (AT4040, AT4050, AT5040) that compete directly with Neumann at half the price.

They also make wireless systems, broadcast mics, lavaliers, headset mics for the Olympic broadcast pool, and the very popular ATH-M50x studio headphones.

AT2020 — the $99 entry-level condenser. Also sold as AT2020USB+ for direct-to-computer.
AT2035 / AT2050 — step up from the AT2020. AT2050 is multi-pattern.
AT4040 — the workhorse studio condenser. ~$300, sounds like much more.
AT4050 — multi-pattern, often called “the poor man’s C414.”
AT4060a — tube large-diaphragm condenser. Vocal mic for the serious project studio.
BP40 — broadcast-style dynamic mic, often compared to the Shure SM7B.
AT875R — short shotgun for video shooters on a budget.
ATH-M50x headphones — the most-recommended studio headphones under $200.

Should you buy one?

The short answer

Get an Audio-Technica if You want serious sound on a sane budget. The AT2035 is the best $150 condenser you can buy. The AT4040 is the “don’t buy a Neumann yet” mic. The BP40 is the SM7B alternative.

Skip Audio-Technica if You specifically want a vintage character — AT’s house sound is clean, modern, neutral. For warmth or color, look at Warm Audio or Aston.
