The basic shapes

Floor, desk, tripod, low-profile

Round-base floor stand. Heavy weighted disk on the bottom, telescoping vertical pole. Most stable, doesn’t tip if you snag the cable.
Tripod floor stand. Three folding legs at the bottom. Lighter, takes up more floor area, but folds flat for travel.
Boom stand. A floor stand with a horizontal arm extending out from the top. Standard for vocal recording in studios.
Desk stand. Short vertical pole with a small base for desktop use. Good for handheld interview mics or small condensers.
Low-profile drum stand. Short tripod with a long sideways boom. For mic’ing kick drums and guitar amps.

What to watch out for

Cheap stands don’t stay where you put them

The cheapest mic stands have plastic clutches that slip over time — you set the height, walk away, and an hour later the boom has drooped two inches. Better stands have brass clutches and rubberized boom locks. Spending $50 instead of $25 makes a real long-term difference.
